Regional Profile

Region Six includes Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties. It's population of 951,000 is 85 percent white (not Hispanic), 8 percent African-American, 4 percent Hispanic and the remaining 3 percent belong to other ethnic groups and races. According to 2007 American Communitiy Survey data, despite an unemployment rate lower than the state average in four of the five counties, poverty was higher than the state average.

In 20078, Kalamazoo had the highest poverty rate in the state (36 percent)( as well as the highest poverty rate for non-Hispanic whites (30 percent) and African Americans (52 percent). Seven of every ten poor adults in Kalamazoo work. About 62 percetn of African American children in the city were poor, the same percentage of African American children in all of Calhoun County.

Between July 2006 and June 2007, 7,626 people in Region Six experienced homelessness.

According to 2000 Censu data, the following percentage of epople in Region Six have incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty threshold:

  • Allegan - 22.6%
  • Barry - 19.4%
  • Berrien - 30.3%
  • Branch - 29.3%
  • Calhoun - 28.4%
  • Cass - 27.1%
  • Kalamazoo - 27.7%
  • St. Joseph - 28.4%
  • Van Buren - 30.2%

Unemployment rates by county in Region Six are as follows:

  •  Allegan - 7.6%
  • Barry - 6.8%
  • Berrien - 8.4%
  • Branch - 9.4%
  • Calhoun - 8.2%
  • Cass - 6.4%
  • Kalamazoo - 7%
  • St. Joseph - 9.5%
  • Van Buren - 8.1%
