LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder ordered U.S. flags throughout the state to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Staff Sgt. Joshua A. Throckmorton on Wednesday, July 20. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Thursday, July 21.

Throckmorton, 28 of Battle Creek, died July 5 in Paktia province, Afghanistan of injuries suffered from an improvised explosive device.

"Staff Sgt. Throckmorton was an admirable solider who dedicated his life to serving our country. My condolences to his family, friends and community as we honor his memory," Snyder said.

Throckmorton was assigned to the 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command in Hohenfels, Germany. He served 15 months in Iraq and was three months into a one-year deployment in Afghanistan. He was awarded posthumously a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek. The service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 at the First Wesleyan Church of Battle Creek.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
