    Flags to be lowered Friday, July 22 for Midland Seaman Aaron Ullom

    LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder ordered U.S. flags throughout the state to be lowered to half-staff in honor of U.S. Navy Seaman Aaron D. Ullom on Friday, July 22. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Saturday, July 23. 

    Ullom, 20, of Midland, died July 12 while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. 

    "Seaman Ullom was a brave young man who sacrificed his life to protect our country. He will be remembered by our entire state for his selfless service," Snyder said.

    Ullom served as a Hospital Corpsman for the Navy and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan in February for his first tour of duty. Ullom's awards include National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and NATO Medal - ISAF Afghanistan.

    Visitation is on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, and at the Midland Evangelical Free Church on Friday from 3 pm until the service begins. Funeral services will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 22 at Midland Evangelical Free Church.

    When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
