Monday, January 16, 2012: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

WHEREAS, this day of service, created by the King Holiday and Service Act, "empowers individuals, strengthens communities" and bridges barriers, drawing us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "beloved community"; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. King devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice and opportunity for all, and he challenged Americans to put forth efforts toward the never-ending work of building a more perfect union; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, service projects are being organized by a wide range of non-profit organizations, private businesses, colleges and universities throughout the country; we join with the Michigan Community Service Commission to encourage all Michigan citizens to pay tribute to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through community service projects on this day and throughout the year;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, January 16, 2012 as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in Michigan.
