WHEREAS, in 2010, 37 Michigan citizens lost their lives as a result of work-related injuries, an increase from 24 deaths in 2009; and,
WHEREAS, every employee in Michigan deserves to work in a safe and healthy environment, and it is the legal obligation of all employers to ensure safe conditions for their workforce; and,
WHEREAS, Worker Memorial Day has been observed since 1989; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), many labor unions and associations to remember workers killed, disabled or injured while on the job, and we encourage further efforts to improve workplace safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Thursday, April 28, 2011 as Worker Memorial Day in Michigan.
