WHEREAS, as one of the world's largest freshwater lakes, Lake Superior is a magnificent and essential part of the life quality and economic vitality of the villages, towns, cities and counties along its shores and in the surrounding basin; and,
WHEREAS, Lake Superior is home to more than 80 species of fish including salmon, brook trout, whitefish and northern pike; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to serving cultural, tribal, recreation and tourism activities, Lake Superior has been a vital link in the Great Lakes Waterway, providing a route for the transportation of iron ore and other manufactured and mined resources; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we remind citizens that many are responsible for protecting and maintaining the beauty of Lake Superior's waters, shores and wildlife, and we encourage visitors and Michigan citizens to acknowledge and celebrate the grand Lake Superior;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, July 17, 2011 as Lake Superior Day in Michigan.
