November 2011: Hire a Veteran Month

WHEREAS, in the midst of World War II, the United States Department of Labor estimated that 15 million men and women serving in the armed services would be unemployed after the war; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1943, a series of programs for education and training were presented to Congress and received unanimous support from both chambers, and on June 22, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Serviceman's Readjustment Act, commonly known as the GI Bill, into law, providing veterans of World War II funds for education, unemployment insurance and housing; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2002, Public Law 107-288, Jobs for Veterans Act, was created to review and improve employment, training and placement services for veterans; Michigan's nearly 700,000 veterans have sacrificed and bravely defended our nation's safety, security and freedoms, and with their experience and training, are ready to offer Michigan employers a wide range of business, technical and leadership skills; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with Michigan's Workforce Development Agency, Veterans' Services Division to celebrate Hire a Veteran Month, and to encourage employers throughout the state to recognize the skills and many contributions of Michigan veterans;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2011 as Hire a Veteran Month in Michigan.
