Thursday, December 1, 2011: World AIDS Day

WHEREAS, worldwide, approximately 33.3 million people have HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)/AIDS with more than two-thirds of these people living in developing countries, and as of October 2011, 19,500 citizens in Michigan were estimated to be living with the virus; and,

 

WHEREAS, the global spread of HIV/AIDS necessitates a wide-reaching effort to increase communication and education to stop the further spread of this virus, one of the most destructive pandemics in history; and,

 

WHEREAS, since 1988, World AIDS Day has served as an opportunity to encourage citizens to learn the facts about HIV/AIDS and to turn that knowledge into action; and,

 

WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Community Health and citizens around the world to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS; as we encourage all citizens to learn more about HIV/AIDS transmission, treatment and prevention, we also remember the millions who have died as a result of HIV/AIDS;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Thursday, December 1, 2011 as World AIDS Day in Michigan.
