May 2012: Michigan Asparagus Month
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to 125 asparagus farms on approximately 11,000 acres, with each grower yielding about 2,100 pounds of asparagus per acre; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan ranks third in the nation for asparagus production and produces 25 million pounds of fresh asparagus each year; the total annual value of the Michigan asparagus crop is estimated at $15 million; and,
WHEREAS, beginning in early May, fresh Michigan asparagus can be found at farmers markets, roadside stands and in grocery produce sections throughout Michigan; adding more vegetables like Michigan asparagus to the daily diet of children and adults in our state will lead to a healthier Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we encourage all residents to support Michigan's bountiful agricultural industry by consuming locally grown asparagus and recognizing its many health benefits;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Michigan Asparagus Month.
