September 2013: Pain Awareness Month

WHEREAS, millions of Michiganders of all ages feel the impact of chronic pain, it is estimated that undertreated and untreated pain costs Michigan citizens as much as $16 billion annually in health care expenses, lost productivity and lost wages; and,

WHEREAS, many types of treatment, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological, are available to manage or greatly ease most pain, when pain is properly treated, many people can resume their normal, active lives; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is nationally recognized as being one of the best sources of information on pain management through its Pain & Symptom Management website

WHEREAS, Michigan’s Automated Prescription System (MAPS) has proven to be effective for ensuring the safety of patients using prescription pain medication; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we raise awareness of pain issues in Michigan and encourage citizens throughout the Great Lakes State to learn more and to respect the situation of those living with pain;

NOW, THEREFORE, be it Resolved, That I, Rick Snyder, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2013 as Pain Awareness Month in Michigan.
