December 5, 2013: Old Newsboys Day

WHEREAS, since 1924, Old Newsboys of Greater Lansing has been providing shoes and boots to needy children. Last year $147,176 was spent on shoes and boots for 5,878 children.

WHEREAS, The Old Newsboys Association, led by its first president R. Guy Brownson, was organized to assist in the efforts begun by George Palmer. The Old Newsboys cooperated with The State Journal and the Lansing Capital News to publish and sell a spoof newspaper during a one-day fund-raising drive. Clergy, educators, businessmen, politicians and other citizens joined in the effort.

WHEREAS, 2013 marks the 90th Anniversary of the Old Newsboys of Greater Lansing, making the organization one of the oldest non-profit organizations currently in mid-Michigan.

WHEREAS, honorary Old Newsboys Association board members for the 2013 year include Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber and MSU Women's Basketball Coach Suzy Merchant.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Thursday, December 5, 2013 as Old Newsboys Day.
