March 24, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin work on a $4 million bridge project on Parkview Avenue over US-131 in Kalamazoo County on Monday, April 7.
Work includes the reconstruction of the Parkview Avenue bridge over US-131. This bridge will be reconstructed using "rapid" bridge construction technology, which uses pre-cast concrete abutments, piers, beams, and bridge deck elements to minimize the duration of construction. Additional work includes construction of a center left-turn lane and the reconstruction of the 12th Street/Parkview Avenue intersection.
"This innovative technology will allow us to complete the reconstruction of this bridge in less than three months, as opposed to the traditional six-months-plus construction schedule for similar bridge projects," said Pete Pfeiffer, manager of MDOT's Transportation Service Center in Kalamazoo. "In partnership with MDOT, Western Michigan University staff will evaluate the effectiveness and the cost-versus-benefit of the bridge components that will be used for this 'rapid' bridge construction."
To assist in data collection, MDOT will be installing a two-camera monitoring system that will record the progress.
During construction of the bridge, Parkview Avenue will be closed east of 12th Street to Drake Road and detoured. The detour route will follow Drake Road, Stadium Drive, and 11th Street. The 12th Street/Parkview Avenue intersection will be closed for approximately two weeks while it is being reconstructed. The detour route will follow ON Avenue and 11th Street.
There will be intermittent single lane closures during nighttime hours on US-131 for the duration of the project. At two points during construction, there will be 15-minute total freeway closures during nighttime hours while the old bridge beams are removed and replaced.
Parkview Avenue is scheduled to be reopened to traffic by June 27, and the entire project is expected to be completed by late July.
