US-141 interstate bridge weight limits to be lifted Friday

Contact:  James Lake 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

March 27, 2008 - - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will lift posted weight restrictions on the US-141 border bridge on Friday, March 28, following completion of a reinforcement project.

Once the temporary traffic signals that were required throughout the four-week project are removed, the posted 28-ton (56,000 pounds) weight limit will be lifted, and all legal loads will be permitted. No overweight permits will be issued for the bridge.

While under way, the $195,000 project to reinforce the bridge's steel girders required drivers of vehicles in excess of 28 tons to use US-8 and US-141 as an alternate route. Weight restrictions have been in place since November on the bridge, which joins Iron Mountain and Niagara, Wis., over the Menominee River.

MDOT and WisDOT have agreed to replace the bridge, which was originally built in 1929, with a new, wider structure in 2010-11. Estimated cost of the bridge replacement is $4.2 million; this project will be coordinated with an urban reconstruction project on US-141 in the city of Niagara.
