Transportation asset management conference scheduled for May 21 in Marquette

Contact:  James Lake 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

March 28, 2008 - - The Michigan Asset Management Council will sponsor the annual Michigan Transportation Asset Management Conference Wednesday, May 21, at Upfront & Company in Marquette. The conference will once again provide a forum for state and local officials to examine the relationship between asset management, pavement management and road funding.

This year's participants will learn more about Public Act 199 of 2007. Signed into law by Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm last December, the legislation now requires the development of a pavement management system for all federal-aid eligible roads.

"Public Act 199 provides a strategy and process for efficiently managing transportation assets based on the long-range condition of the entire system. We believe this approach greatly benefits Michigan residents and businesses, and will continue to play an important role in strengthening our economy and improving the quality of life for all Michigan residents," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle.

The Michigan Asset Management Council includes representatives from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Michigan Municipal League (MML), the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC), the Michigan Townships Association (MTA), municipal and regional planning organizations, and the County Road Association of Michigan (CRAM).

The Michigan Asset Management Council, created in 2002 by the Michigan Legislature, promotes the concept that the transportation system is unified, rather than separated by jurisdictional ownership. The council's mission is to recommend an asset management strategy to the State Transportation Commission and the Michigan Legislature for Michigan's entire transportation system.

To register for the conference, contact the Local Technical Assistance Program at 906-487-2102. Seating is limited; early registration is encouraged. More information about the conference is available online at www.michiganltap.org/TAM2008.
