July
30, 2007 - The fields of construction,
science, and engineering are promising many career opportunities for Michigan's future workforce. The Job Show for Teens Summer 2007 edition, a
quarterly cable TV show produced by the Department of Labor & Economic
Growth (DLEG), highlights the construction trade of brick masonry; discusses
job creation in engineering and science; and provides Michigan's youth with information on
preparation and success in pursuing these career choices.
The 30-minute
program, hosted by DLEG's Nirva Civilus, features teen correspondents from two
southeastern Michigan high schools
conducting one-on-one interviews with career professionals of their respective
trades. Saline High School correspondents visited Livonia based Leidal & Hart to gain insight on the skills and
training required in brick masonry; while correspondents from Westland's
William D. Ford Career Technical Center visited the 2006 YES Expo and
interviewed representatives from Michigan Technological University, Pulte
Homes, and TV Host, Bill Nye the Science Guy about Michigan's job outlook in
science and engineering.
In addition, Howard Hipes, a skilled trade mentoring coordinator and recruiter
of BAC Skilled Trades, contributed to the conversation by dispelling the myths;
discussing the benefits; and acknowledging the personal rewards of
participating in a construction apprenticeship.
The Job Show for Teens will be cablecast
throughout the summer and early fall on 78 cable TV systems statewide. To find
out when the 30-minute show will cablecast on your local cable channel, visit

The Summer 2007 edition of the Job for Teens program is its 4th release and
sponsored by the Office of Career & Technical Preparation (OCTP). Formerly
of DLEG and currently residing in the Michigan Department of Education, the
OCTP mission is to prepare Michigan students with the necessary
academic, technical, and work-behavior skills to enter, compete, and advance in
education and their career.
The segments featuring careers in
fields of brick masonry, construction, science, and engineering were produced
in part from information provided by the Michigan's Hot 50 Jobs for Today &
Tomorrow list. This listing, created by
the Bureau of Labor Market & Strategic Initiatives, highlights the positive
long-term growth of 50 occupations for the state of Michigan.
The Job Show for Teens is one of three cable
television programs produced within DLEG by the Office of Media Technology. In
2006, the show received a national Bronze Telly Award
for excellence and outstanding achievement in non-network television
programming.
