June 10, 2009

Fayette Historic State Park in the Garden Peninsula in Michigan's Upper Peninsula will celebrate the 90th anniversary of Michigan state parks on Saturday, June 20, with a "Christmas in June" event.

Activities will include a campsite Christmas decorating contest with presents. Other activities will include children's games and activities, reindeer games, a Christmas cookie walk, holiday crafts, winter wonderland scavenger hunt, and a traditional Christmas feast hot dog concession.

Events will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., when a 90th anniversary cake cutting ceremony with the elves is scheduled.

The park has received word through the Holly-hotline that the Grinch may be making an appearance. The park will need a large number of holiday-spirited children to offset the chill and help the Grinch find his Christmas spirit.

Fayette Historic State Park is located at 13700 13.25 Lane, 18 miles south of Garden City off M-183 in the Upper Peninsula. For a detailed schedule of events, information about the park, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park at (906) 644-2603 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/fayette. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling the DNR central reservation system at 800-447-2757.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

The DNR and Fayette Historic State Park would like to thank all sponsors, area businesses, friends and supporters for sponsoring events and activities for the 90th anniversary of Michigan State Parks.

Join the DNR in celebrating the 90th anniversary of Michigan State Parks (1919-2009) this year. Events are being posted at www.michigan.gov/dnrgogetoutdoors.
