U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Temporarily Closes Crooked River (Alanson) Lock

The Crooked River (Alanson) Lock located in Emmet County and part of Michigan's popular inland waterway today was closed temporarily by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The lock, which is owned and maintained by the Corps of Engineers and operated by the Department of Natural Resources, underwent major repairs earlier this spring, but maintenance personnel today discovered a possible crack in a main shaft and wear on some keyways.

The lock operates with 575-pound gear boxes, which have to be critically aligned for proper operation of the lock gates. Repairs are underway and officials said the lock should reopen Friday, June 19.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
