LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the State of Michigan will receive $36.2 million in U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) preparedness grants to bolster the state's readiness, response and recovery capabilities for both natural and man-made emergencies.
Michigan received a significant increase in funding under the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) that will bolster security measures at nonprofit organizations. The grant is designed to provide funds to nonprofit organizations that are deemed high-risk for a potential terrorist attack. Michigan received the sixth highest allocation for the UASI NSGP; an increase of more than $500,000 compared to FY 2008.
Nonprofits awarded funds include:
- Botsford Hospital
- Children's Hospital of Michigan
- Congregation B'nai Moshe
- Detroit Receiving Hospital
- Harper-Hutzel Hospital
- Henry Ford Macomb Hospital
- Mercy Memorial Hospital System
- Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center
- Sinai-Grace Hospital
- St. John Hospital & Medical Center
"These grants will help us protect citizens by maintaining a proper emergency response system and strengthening our efforts to ensure their health and safety, particularly during times of crisis," Governor Jennifer M. Granholm said.
"Protecting Michigan citizens from the threat of terrorist attacks, major disasters and emergencies is a vital role of government," stated Col. Peter C. Munoz, director of the Michigan State Police and State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. "Michigan's outstanding performance in the competitive federal urban areas nonprofit security grant program is a milestone as we continue to enhance protection of our state's critical infrastructures."
Michigan's grant application received favorable scores by the DHS resulting in additional funds being allocated to the state compared to initial federal projections. This is the first year the DHS provided projections designed to assist each state budget for the use of FY 2009 funds.

The DHS will provide approximately $1.7 billion nationwide in preparedness grants for FY 2009. Michigan will receive a nearly 2.5 percent reduction from the $37.1 million the state received last year.
The state will allocate funds to local jurisdictions after the DHS sends the official grant award notification. The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is the designated state administrative agency for federal homeland security grants.
