Agency: Natural Resources

June 18, 2009

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) today informed the Department of Natural Resources that the Alanson Lock on Crooked River in Emmet County will not reopen on Friday, June 19, as originally anticipated.

The lock was closed for repairs on June 16 after ACOE maintenance personnel noticed a cracked shaft and wear on some keyways. The lock, which is owned and maintained by the ACOE, but operated by the DNR Parks and Recreation Division, will require additional time to complete the repairs.

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but we feel it is imperative that the lock and gear boxes are aligned and operating properly for the safety of all boaters," said Ron Olson, chief of the DNR Parks and Recreation Division.

There is no estimate as to when repairs will be complete.

For updates on the status of the lock, contact Petoskey State Park at (231) 347-2311.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
