MPSC: Consumer Alert Provides Tips for Safe Use of a Portable Generator

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

July 16, 2009

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today reminded utility customers that it has a consumer alert available that provides useful tips on the safe use of a portable generator.

"It is vitally important that utility customers understand how to use a portable generator safely," said MPSC Commissioner Monica Martinez.  "Unfortunately, improper use can bring fatal results."

The consumer alert covers tips on how to determine the proper size of a generator prior to purchase, and how to install and use a generator safely.  Most important, portable generators should never be operated indoors.

The consumer alert is available on the MPSC's Web site:

The consumer alert may also be obtained by calling 1-800-292-9555.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.
