July 27, 2009 -- Starting this week, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee improvements to I-94 in western Washtenaw County. Two separate projects are expected to begin on Friday, July 31, stretching from the Jackson/Washtenaw county line east to Parker Road, near the village of Dexter. The projects, which total $17.3 million, are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
The first project stretches from the county line east to Freer Road, near Chelsea. That project involves resurfacing 6.6 miles of pavement, along with ramp improvements at Kalmbach Road, Pierce Road (Old US-12), and the M-52 interchange. Work is expected to be completed on this project by the end of October 2009.
The second project is a two-year project between Freer Road and Parker Road. The work in 2009 involves shoulder widening and reconstruction, along with ramp improvements at Fletcher Road and the MDOT rest area located off eastbound I-94. In 2010, the 5.5 mile stretch of I-94 will be resurfaced, along with guardrail upgrades and drainage improvements.
During construction, one lane will be maintained in each direction on I-94 at all times. On weekdays, single-lane closures will occur at night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. On weekends, single-lane closures may occur starting at 8 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday.
There will be no lane closures during holidays or special events like race weekend at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn or during home football games at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
For work on the ramps, certain ramps will be closed and traffic detoured for a total of 21 days for reconstruction. A more detailed schedule of which ramps will be closed and when will be made available closer to the start of work on those ramps.
