The Department of Natural Resources announced today that the East Unit of Tomahawk Creek Flooding State Forest Campground, located in Presque Isle County, has reopened. This designated campground was closed last summer to implement upgrades to the campground. These improvements were funded through a grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.
All site work was completed early this summer and new fire rings and picnic tables were installed in July. "The delay in installing these site amenities, although unplanned, had the benefit of allowing the newly planted grass seed to become better established," said DNR Fire Officer Rob Pelton.
The improved campground has been expanded to 23 sites, an increase of 14 sites from the previous layout. There are two campsites that are handicap accessible, complying with all site requirements recommended in the Accessible Guidelines for Outdoor Developed Areas. Other improvements include realignment and upgrades to the campground road, realignment and enlargement of campsites to improve privacy and access, installation of new fire rings and picnic tables on each campsite, installation of new accessible vault toilets with parking and access routes to the toilets, hand pump, and lakefront.
