July 29, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will invest $723,000 to complete an M-61 "fiber mat" project in Gladwin County. The project includes the placement of a reinforcing fiber coating on the pavement, along with completing a culvert replacement.
"Work is progressing well," said Bill Mayhew, MDOT Mt. Pleasant Transportation Service Center (TSC), delivery engineer. "The culvert replacement work, which started earlier this month, has been completed and road resurfacing will begin Monday, Aug. 3."
Roadwork, which extends 10 miles on M-61 from east of M-30 to the Gladwin/Bay county lines, is expected to be completed by mid-August 2009. Intermittent single-lane closures will be in effect, with traffic maintained using flag control.
"The fiber reinforcement process involves the application of a surface treatment, or mat, which is reinforced with glass fiber," said Terry Palmer, MDOT Mt. Pleasant TSC manager. "This creates a stress-absorbing layer which completely seals the entire area of pavement, providing a uniform, textured road surface."
This project will benefit the public by increasing motorist safety and extending the life of the roadway for many years to come.
