July 30, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced plans are in the works for replacing the Nine Mile Road bridge over I-75 in the community of Hazel Park. A portion of the Nine Mile Road bridge collapsed on July 15 when a crash involving a tanker truck caused an explosion and fire. The plans were announced this morning by State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle to the State Transportation Commission.

"We have made a decision to replace the Nine Mile Road bridge with a larger span," said Metro Region Engineer Tony Kratofil.

This section of I-75 has a long-term plan and has received environmental clearance for widening and reconstruction to add a new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane. In order to use funding as efficiently as possible, the new structure will be built to accommodate future widening. In addition to building a longer bridge, the project also will include reconstructing I-75 under Nine Mile Road to improve clearance under the bridge.

"Today's standards mandate that we design bridges to last 80 years," Kratofil said. "We have to be prudent with tax dollars to make sure our investments meet our long-term requirements."

MDOT will be using a design/build contract to expedite the completion of this work and will announce project dates when they're available. It is anticipated that the total cost to replace the structure with its new configuration, reconstruct the I-75 freeway, and have the design and engineering completed will be approximately $10 million, of which 90 percent will be paid for by federal funding. MDOT is currently pursuing federal Emergency Relief Funds to help recoup the cost of the emergency response.
