July 31, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that contracting crews have opened the new 26 Mile Road overpass above M-53 six weeks ahead of schedule. The new bridge, which includes two modern roundabouts on the east and west ends, is included in the ongoing $40 million upgrade of the M-53 freeway in Macomb County.
"The early opening is a welcome sign for business owners and commuters," said Drew Buckner, manager of MDOT's Macomb Transportation Service Center. "We appreciate everyone's patience as we worked through this important piece of the project."
On Friday, March 13, crews demolished the 26 Mile Road overpass. Afterwards, the rebuilding of the new bridge began, along with the construction of the roundabouts. The work to rebuild the overpass was expected to last until mid-September. The roundabouts were included in the project to assist with the increased traffic flow on 26 Mile Road, and to help alleviate delays for drivers entering and exiting the freeway below.
MDOT has posted an animation online showing motorists how to drive through the roundabouts. The animation can be found on the M-53 project page under "Major Projects" link on the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/mdot.
The resurfacing of the M-53 freeway, between 18 and 27 Mile roads, is expected to be completed in mid-November.
