Michigan International Speedway travel easier as MDOT suspends construction

Contact:  Kari Arend, MDOT Office of Communications, 517-206-1609
Agency: Transportation

August 11, 2009 -- Once again, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will suspend work and reopen lanes on major state highways, including I-94 near Chelsea and US-127 south of Jackson, for the second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). The second big race of the season, the CARFAX 400, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Overall, work on state roads in counties surrounding MIS, which is located in Brooklyn in Jackson County, will be suspended starting Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7 a.m., until Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 7 a.m.

To assist motorists and race fans, MDOT is posting MIS race day travel information on the Web, including maps and information about statewide construction projects, information about the inbound and outbound traffic patterns, and links to the Web sites of MIS and WRIF (101.1 FM, the official sponsor of MIS). Motorists can find information online at: www.michigan.gov/mdot or www.michigan.gov/drive.

People also can follow MDOT at www.twitter.com/MichiganDOT or visit the "Michigan Department of Transportation" page on Facebook and become a fan.
