The Eddy Discovery Center at Waterloo State Recreation Area near Chelsea has announced its fall nature programs, set to begin the weekend after Labor Day.
The programs are:
-- Kayaking. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Bring your own kayak and personal flotation device for a guided tour of Winnewana Lake. Participants should meet at the center at 10 a.m.
-- Geology Arts Fair. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20. Among the weekend activities are geology walks, fossil digs, Petoskey stone polishing and many items for sale, including jewelry, fossils, rocks and minerals. No registration is required for this event.
-- Solar System Sojourn. 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. This program is both indoors and outdoors along the Solar System Hiking Trail.
-- Michigan Fish. 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Discover the many species of fish that live in the Waterloo State Recreation Area lakes.
-- Skull Detectives. 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Learn to identify Waterloo's mammals from observing their skulls. The skull helps determine where and how the animal lives.
-- Falling Leaf Scrapbooking. 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Learn why leaves fall and change colors while creating a lasting memento by collecting only leaves that have fallen to the ground. Participants should bring any personal photos they want to use in their scrapbooks.
-- Migration Marvel. 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Learn about bird migration, the many hazards they face in the process and take a short walk to observe birds around the center.
-- Birds of Prey. 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Come to the Portage Lake Lakeview Shelter to see two live birds of prey during this presentation. Learn about their characteristics and behaviors.
-- Cranes of Waterloo Festival. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. A full day of activities is planned including a life animal presentation, crane origami, leaf prints, migration game and sandhill crane natural history and a tour to observe the cranes. No registration is required.
-- Halloween Hoopla. 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Learn what frozen frogs and mummies have in common because some creatures actually freeze solid over the winter and revive in the spring.
-- Getting Their ZZZs. 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. Many animals are active in the winter, but others migrate and some hibernate. Find out more about hibernating wildlife that are "getting their zzzs" during the winter months.
-- Comets: Icy Visitors From Afar. 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. This program features the Comet Chef and participants will learn to make their own comets.
-- Tracks & Scat. 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Mammals and birds leave many clues that we can observe. In this program, you will take a closer look and learn what evidence wildlife leaves behind.
The Waterloo State Recreation Area's Eddy Discovery Center is located at 17030 Bush Rd., just west of Chelsea between Pierce and McClure Roads, off of Exit 157 on I-94.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
