The Department of Natural Resources will host an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 26, to allow the public to review and comment on preliminary design plans for the redevelopment of Lac LaBelle State Harbor, located on Lac LaBelle in Grant Township in Keweenaw County.
The open house will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Lac LaBelle Fire Hall, located at 11819 Superior St. in Lac Labelle. Individuals are welcome to visit the site at that time, view the preliminary design plans, ask DNR staff questions and provide input.
"This project will include replacement and redesign of the dock and pier systems, creation of individual boating slips, relocation of the existing boat launch, and will improve public boating opportunities at Lac LaBelle and Lake Superior in the Keweenaw area," said Ron Olson, chief of the DNR Parks and Recreation Division.
Michigan is one of the nation's leaders in the number of registered watercrafts, approaching nearly one million. Boaters enjoy more than 11,000 inland lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams and 3,000 miles of freshwater shoreline --- more than any other state.
This project will be funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees and a portion of the Michigan marine fuel tax for the construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities, harbors and inland waterways.
For more information about this project, the meeting or persons with disabilities needing accommodations to attend this meeting, contact Keith Cheli, DNR district planner, at (231) 627-4632 a minimum of five business days before the meeting.
