Agency: Transportation

August 18, 2009 - Starting early next week, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee improvements to I-96 in eastern Ingham County. Two projects are expected to begin on Monday, August 24, stretching from approximately US-127 east to M-52.

The first project includes resurfacing 8.7 miles of I-96 between Meridian Road and M-52. This $7.4 million dollar project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). All work will take place at night only to reduce the inconvenience to motorists. Work is expected to be completed by mid-November.

The second project is a two-year project that involves reconstructing I-96 between College Road, just east of US-127, and Meridian Road. Starting next week, work begins that includes temporary widening and construction of median crossovers, along with shoulder improvements and pavement repairs in preparation for maintaining traffic in 2010. In addition, pavement repairs also will take place on the Okemos Road bridge over I-96.

For both projects, there will be single-lane closures in each direction at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Shoulder closures are allowed at any time along I-96.

There will be no lane closures during holidays or special events like home football games at Michigan State University.

For up-to-date information on this project, go to the list of statewide lane closures at: www.michigan.gov/drive. Follow MDOT at www.twitter.com/MichiganDOT or visit the "Michigan Department of Transportation" page on Facebook and become a fan.
