August 20, 2009 - Across the state on August 26th, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is inviting employers to "Take a Stand" for workplace safety and health.

For this fifth annual "Take a Stand Day," the MIOSHA program is dedicating more than 125 professional staff to visit Michigan high-hazard industries targeted by the MIOSHA Strategic Plan. The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG).

MIOSHA safety and health professionals-including compliance staff, outreach consultants, managers, and supervisors-have been scheduled on "Take a Stand Day" to provide one-on-one consultations. There will be no CITATIONS or FINES for participating workplaces. However, participants must agree to correct all serious conditions.

"This unprecedented campaign offers employers the opportunity to partner with MIOSHA-without fear of fines or penalties-to improve their work environment," said DELEG Deputy Director & Chief of Staff Susan R. Corbin. "I encourage all Michigan employers to ‘Take a Stand' on August 26th to make worker safety and health a top priority in their workplace."

During the consultation visit, MIOSHA staff will work cooperatively with the companies to recognize hazardous conditions and to effectively address safety and health issues. MIOSHA staff will focus on areas of direct concern to the employers, including:
  • Explain the application of specific MIOSHA rules,
  • Conduct a safety and health hazard survey,
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of a safety and health system, and
  • Provide other requested technical assistance.

"Having an effective safety and healthy management system can significantly reduce workplace injuries and illnesses," said MIOSHA Director Doug Kalinowski. "An effective system to protect worker safety and health is not a drain on business profits-it is an important part of being successful in today's global economy."

Although most professional staff are participating in this campaign, MIOSHA will address emergency situations if the need arises. To schedule a MIOSHA professional on "Take a Stand Day," please contact the Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division at 517.322.1809, or visit our website at www.michigan.gov/miosha.
