The Department of Natural Resources' Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) Program is planning a "Women in Nature" weekend Sept. 18-20 at NettieBay Lodge, located at 9011 West 638 Highway in Hawks, which is located in Presque Isle County.

Unlike past BOW programs, this program will be open to girls ages 12 and over who are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Past programs had an age requirement of 18 and older.

"We are attempting to expand the BOW program so women can bring along their daughters, granddaughters or nieces to introduce them to the great outdoors and learn about outdoor recreation," said Dennis Fox, manager of the DNR's Recruitment and Retention Section. "This is an excellent opportunity for a shared family experience learning about hunting, fishing, kayaking, archery or hiking."

Participants will check in at NettieBay Lodge starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. There will be social activities and a tour of the lodge offered. At 7 p.m., there will be a firearm safety class for those who do not have a hunter safety certificate, valid hunting license or a concealed weapons permit. At 8:30, there will be a bonfire and hot dog roast at the lodge.

Breakfast will be offered at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the lodge. Activities start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and participants can choose up to four classes from offerings such as Beginning Handgun, Basic Shotgun, Beginning Archery, Fly-Fishing, Basic Fishing Skills (bait and spin-casting), Kayaking, Global Positioning System - Map and Compass, Backpacking and Hiking, Outdoor Cooking and Outdoor Photography. Lunch and dinner will be provided at the lodge. Evening activities include fly and fish knot tying, crafts and games. A bonfire and social time will be offered at 8:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, breakfast will be offered at 8 a.m., and then participants will be able to spend the morning using their new skills. A light lunch and wrap up session will be offered at 11:30 a.m.

Total cost for the program is $250, which includes lodging, meals, instruction and class materials. Enrollment is limited and preregistration is required. Participants can register online or view more information on this program at www.michigan.gov/bow. For more information, contact Sue Tabor at (517) 241-2225.
