The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that waterfowl season begins 30 minutes before sunrise Tuesday, Sept. 1, with the opening of the early Canada goose season.

The early season, which is designed to help manage the resident population of giant Canada geese, opens statewide and runs through Sept. 15, except in the Upper Peninsula, and Huron, Saginaw, and Tuscola counties, where it runs through Sept. 10.

"With an estimated population of more than 200,000 resident Canada geese, hunters should have excellent recreational opportunities this season," said DNR waterfowl specialist Barb Avers.

The daily bag limit is five.

Hunters 16 years of age and older are reminded that in addition to a small game license and Michigan waterfowl authorization, they must have a federal waterfowl hunting stamp in their possession. Youths 10 to 16 years of age only need to purchase a small game license to hunt waterfowl.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, accessible use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources for current and future generations.
