September 2, 2009 -- Adopt-A-Highway volunteers are preparing for a clean sweep of state highways - their third and final one in 2009 - from Saturday, Sept. 12, through Sunday, Sept. 20. Approximately 2,700 groups will be out during the nine-day pickup period, said the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and they will clean more than 5,700 miles of highways.
"Adopt-A-Highway volunteers really help us stretch our limited resources while accomplishing an important task - keeping Michigan highways clean," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "It takes thousands of volunteers and we are grateful for their help. We ask motorists to watch out for these folks, and drive carefully during the pickup period."
Annually, the Adopt-A-Highway program saves MDOT more than $1 million. The statewide beautification program is supported by groups who pick up litter three times a year, in April, July and September. Current volunteers include members of various civic organizations, churches, labor unions, corporations, government employees, and family members honoring a loved one.
A number of 2-mile sections of highway remain available for adoption.
