M-37 opens, M-46 closes as roundabout work progresses in Casnovia

September 8, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and their contractors have begun Stage 2 of the M-37/M-46 intersection project near the village of Casnovia. Stage 1 included the reconstruction of M-37 from M-46 north to Moon Road, substantial grading and earthwork to shape the adjacent slopes and ditches, and various drainage and safety improvements.

The second stage of this $2.9 million project opens M-37 and includes the reconstruction of a half-mile segment of M-46, as well as the reconfiguration of the M-37/M-46 intersection into a roundabout. During this stage, M-46 will be closed between Canada Road and M-37, with traffic routed along much the same detour utilized for M-37 traffic in Stage 1: Canada Road north to Bailey Road, east to M-37, and south back to M-46.

Work is expected to be completed in early November with final restoration and paving occurring in the spring of 2010. Motorists should still anticipate traffic shifts with intermittent lane and shoulder closures throughout the duration of the project. Access will be provided to businesses in the M-37/M-46 project area at all times.

Motorists will benefit from the improved ride quality, extended pavement life, and increased safety of the intersection through construction of the roundabout. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
