Sept. 14, 2009

The public is invited to discuss local wildlife issues with the Department of Natural Resources' Southwestern Management Unit at a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Rockford.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rockford Sportsman's Club, located at 11115 Northland Dr. NE in Rockford. The intent of the meeting is to introduce local staff, highlight wildlife habitat and other projects that are planned for the winter months, and provide a question and answer period for attendees. In addition, the master plan for the Crane Pond State Game Area in Cass and Saint Joseph counties will be presented for public comment. Plan copies are available for review at the Plainwell Operations Service Center, 621 North Tenth St., Plainwell, MI 49080, or by calling (269) 685-6851. Comments received by Nov. 1 will be incorporated into the final document.

The Southwestern Management Unit covers the following counties: Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, St. Joseph and Van Buren.

"We feel it is important for residents to be involved with local wildlife issues. It is our desire to use the public meeting process as a way to provide information and exchange ideas with residents in the Southwestern Management Unit," said Sara Schaefer, DNR Southwestern Management Unit supervisor.

Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the meeting should contact Cindy McQueer (269) 673-2430, a minimum of five business days before the meeting. Requests made less than five business days before the event may not be accommodated.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, accessible use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources for current and future generations.
