Sept. 14, 2009
The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that an antlerless-only deer season opens Thursday, Sept. 17, and runs though Sept. 21, on private land in selected areas.
Areas open during the early season include the six-county area in the northeast Lower Peninsula, where bovine tuberculosis is endemic in the herd, and all of southern Michigan. Check the 2009 Michigan Hunting and Trapping Guide for details.
Hunters are required to have an antlerless deer license for the appropriate Deer Management Unit in which they are hunting. New this year are two multi-county deer management units, which offer hunters increased flexibility. DMU 487 consists of the six-county TB zone. DMU 486 includes all counties in southern Michigan except Kent, Monroe, Wayne, Macomb and St. Clair.
Private land antlerless licenses are available at all license vendors and on the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr. Hunters may purchase two licenses per day. In southern Michigan there is an annual restriction of five antlerless licenses per year, but no such restriction is in place for DMU 487.
Hunters took approximately 12,900 antlerless deer last year during the state's first September antlerless-only deer hunt.
Hunters are reminded it is illegal to use bait in the entire Lower Peninsula.
