Sept. 16, 2009
Fort Wilkins Historic State Park will host its second annual "GO-Get Outdoors" Geocaching Event on Saturday, Sept. 26, with support from the Fort Wilkins Natural History Association and donations from local businesses.
Several geocaches of varying difficulty will be placed at historically, geologically or naturally significant sites. The individual acquiring the most "points" will have first choice from a selection of prizes. Prize drawings will continue throughout the event and into the evening as awards last and the fun continues.
The younger generation, perhaps not yet familiar with a global positioning system (GPS) device, can get hands-on experience when participating in a treasure hunt.
In addition to receiving some geocache goodies, "hunters" possessing letterboxing pads may have them stamped by the park upon completion of the hunt.
The event begins at 10 a.m. in the West Barracks of Fort Wilkins when the cache list will be distributed. The treasure hunt begins at 2:30 p.m. in the pavilion. Prize drawings and a cookout begin at 4 p.m. in the West Campground common area, and participants must be present at the time of drawing to win prizes. A campfire social will follow with the roasting of hotdogs and marshmallows, hot cider, coffee and more. All are invited to come and share geocaching adventures while enjoying the fall color season in the beautiful Keweenaw.
Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is located at 15223 U.S. Highway 41 in Copper Harbor.
