Sept. 16, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources announced that Muskallonge Lake State Park will host a harvest festival weekend on Oct.2-3 designed to promote fun and enjoyment of Michigan's great outdoor resources in and around the park.

"With autumn colors in abundance, it will be a perfect time to ?GO-Get Outdoors' and camp in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This is a great weekend for families to spend time together carving pumpkins, decorating their campsites, and trick-or-treating in a beautiful outdoor environment," said DNR Park Supervisor Jim Dzelak.

Contests will be held for the best decorated camp site, pumpkin carving, and a camper chili cook-off. Fellow campers will vote on for the winners of each contest and awards will be presented.

Individuals wishing to participate in the contests, as a competitor or a judge, can pick up an event registration form upon their arrival at the park. All events are free; however, campers will have to supply their own materials for the decorating contests and the chili cook-off. Fresh-pressed apple cider and doughnuts also will be available for the campers this weekend.

Muskallonge Lake State Park has 159 sites in the modern campground with accessible facilities. It is located near Deer Park in northern Luce County, off County Road 407, 26 miles northwest of Newberry.

For more information about this event, the park, accessibility at this park, contact the park supervisor at (906) 658-3338 (or TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired) or visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/muskallonge. Camping reservations can be made by calling 800-447-2757 or online at www.midnrreservations.com.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, accessible use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources for current and future generations.
