Spetember 16, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources announced today that it is proceeding with an equestrian trail demonstration project on a section of the Polly Ann Trail located in Oakland County. The project will include the construction of a separate equestrian trail that will parallel the paved surface for walking, biking and other non-motorized use within the rail-trail corridor.

The demonstration project is being implemented based on recommendations identified in the Materials, Design and Cost Study for the Polly Ann Equestrian Trail requested by the DNR's Forest, Mineral and Fire Management Division. This study can be viewed on the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnrrecreationcamping.

Trail improvements will be constructed in the Village of Leonard between Elmwood and Gerst roads. A series of trail surfaces will be evaluated for performance and durability. The demonstration area will cover just over 3,000 feet. Results will help determine development standards and options for future equestrian trail construction methods. Details are being finalized and a spring construction start is expected.

The study and project are being funded through a federal Recreation Trails Program (RTP) Grant administered by the DNR. RTP grant funding is derived from federal Department of Transportation gas tax revenues; it is used exclusively for recreation trail development projects and cannot be applied toward non-recreation projects.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection,
management, accessible use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources
for current and future generations.
