Program keeps senior drivers safe behind the wheel
A good fit can make all the difference when you're behind the wheel of your
car. That's the word from Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land,
AAA Michigan and AARP.
The Department of State has teamed up with AAA Michigan and AARP to promote
CarFit, a traffic safety program for mature drivers. The CarFit program will
visit Wayne State University's Oakland Center, 33737 W. 12 Mile Road, Farmington
Hills on Friday, Sept. 25 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
"I encourage all seniors to take advantage of this free program," Land said.
"CarFit representatives help adjust the settings for controls, mirrors, seats
and other components--making seniors safer and more comfortable behind the
wheel."
"This program is aimed at helping seniors drive safely on the road," said
Jack Peet, Community Safety Services manager for AAA Michigan. "As drivers
mature, their vehicle needs may change. We want to help them ensure that their
vehicles are properly adjusted for their needs."
Trained professionals help drivers adjust their vehicle's controls to best
fit their height and size. They also offer community-specific resources and
activities to enhance driver safety.
"As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and
even size and height may make us less comfortable and reduce our control behind
the wheel," said Larry Meeusen, state coordinator for the AARP Driver Safety
Program in Michigan. "CarFit gives older adults the tools to help them stay on
today's roads safely and to stay connected to their communities for as long as
possible."
To participate in CarFit, you must be a licensed driver at least 65 years old
and own a registered vehicle. Call AARP's Andrea Palmer at (866) 227-7448 to
schedule an appointment.
CarFit was developed through collaboration among the American Occupational
Therapy Association, AAA and AARP.
