The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will meet on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Ontonagon Theatre of Performing Arts, located at 311 N. Steel St. in Ontonagon.
Prior to the meeting of the committee of the whole, there will be two policy committee meetings. The NRC Policy Committee on Land Management will meet at 12 noon to discuss access for timber sales and to review the status of municipal/school forest lands.
At 1:45 p.m., the NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will meet to discuss proposed regulation changes for wildlife and fisheries, including the NRC's authority to permit the supplemental feeding of deer in certain Upper Peninsula counties and quality deer management procedures. There also will be a report on the UP Habitat Work Group's private land wildlife issues identification efforts.
At 3 p.m., the NRC Committee of the Whole will convene to discuss action items before Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries. The committee also will receive an update on the UP Citizens' Advisory Committees, and the 2010 state budget and present special recognitions to certain DNR employees.
Public appearances before the commission will begin at 4:30 p.m. Persons wishing to provide public comments to the commission at the meeting may sign up by noon on Friday, Oct. 2, by contacting Teresa Gloden, assistant to the NRC, at (517) 373-2352 or by e-mail at glodent@michigan.gov. Persons also may register with Gloden at the meeting to speak to the commission.
At 5 p.m., there will be a special presentation of a DNR Partner in Conservation Award to the Normenco Sportsmen's Club of Powers.
Action items before the commission at this meeting include a technical amendment to the wildlife conservation order for state managed waterfowl areas. Director Humphries will consider several action items at this meeting, including an array of fishing regulation updates, an order to regulate off-road vehicle use at Muskallonge Lake State Park in Luce County and Clear Lake State Park in Montmorency County and a proposed Oct. 27 oil and gas lease auction. She also will consider authorizing some land transactions in Alger County.
