Oct. 19, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources announced that the construction of the new Bergland Dock Boating Access Site on Lake Gobebic in Ontonagon County is now complete.

The project, which began July 13 and was finished on Oct. 6, includes a 36-foot wide by 70-foot long ramp and a five-foot wide by 30-foot long universally accessible courtesy pier. Additionally, a 50-foot wide by 225-foot long navigational channel was dredged and marked with buoys.

The access site also includes an ADA compliant vault toilet and 20 car/trailer parking spaces, two of which are ADA compliant and one reserved for law enforcement vehicles.

"The new Bergland Dock site provides a top-notch access point to Lake Gogebic for all of our users," said Baraga State Park Supervisor Dan Dowdy. "We are pleased to have the project completed in time for use by fall walleye anglers and waterfowl hunters."

The project was funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees and a portion of the Michigan marine fuel tax for the construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities, harbors and inland waterways. For more information about the Bergland Dock Boating Access Site, contact Dowdy at (906) 353-6558.

Boating access site permits are $24 for an annual permit, or $6 for a daily permit, for both residents and nonresidents. Boating access site permits also are available at fee sites. For a list of boating access sites that require a permit, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr and click on "Recreation, Camping & Boating," or visit www.mcgi.state.mi.us/MRBIS for all boating access sites throughout the state.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, accessible use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources for current and future generations.
