Cheboygan State Park in northern Michigan will hold a "GO-Get Outdoors" lantern lit cross-country ski evening on Sunday,
Feb. 14, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Beginning at the park trailhead off Suffern Road in Cheboygan, skiers will find about 1.8 miles of groomed and track-set trails lit by lanterns every 50 feet.
"If you have never cross-country skied by lanterns, you will experience a new adventure of being on the trail with the woods aglow from the light of the lanterns," said Park Supervisor, Paul Koszegi. "The lantern lit trail is also a unique way to celebrate Valentine's Day with someone special."
Visitors can enjoy a bonfire at the trailhead before they start out, and will then find another bonfire, snacks and hot chocolate at the 14 Foot Shoals cabin, located at the halfway point on the trail. Snowshoers are also welcome to attend, but are asked to keep off the groomed ski tracks.
The park is open throughout the winter for cross-country skiing. Interested parties are encouraged to call the park ahead of time to check on trail conditions and updates, in case it is necessary to cancel this event due to weather conditions.
Cheboygan State Park also offers several rustic cabins for winter lodging. Each cabin sleeps up to eight people. Make a Valentine's Day reservation for the night, or the entire weekend. Reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling the central reservation system at 800-447-2757.
Cheboygan State Park is located at 4490 Beach Rd., just two miles southeast of Cheboygan on US-23.
