Let's Move campaign will complement state's Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan initiative

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement on First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign on childhood obesity:

"I applaud First Lady Michelle Obama for tackling the issue of childhood obesity.  Over the past four decades, child obesity rates have soared in the United States and Michigan.  Nearly $3 billion in annual medical costs is attributed to obesity in Michigan, so we have to address this issue if we are to reduce the cost of health care.  The Let's Move campaign will enhance our efforts, through our Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan initiative that establishes a five-year plan to fight this epidemic.  We look forward to partnering with the First Lady and the Obama administration on this campaign to improve the health of Michigan's children."
