LANSING–Two Michigan Department of Management and Budget employees received top honors from the Greater Lansing Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) at the group’s professional development conference Feb. 22.
Sean Carlson, Director of DMB’s Office of Acquisition Services, was recognized as Government Financial Manager of the Year, and Doreen Brown, accountant with the Office of Financial Services, received the organization’s Community Service Award.
“We are proud of the quality, commitment, and effort our employees model, both in state government and in community service,” said DMB Director Mitch Irwin.
Carlson was instrumental in the effort to renegotiate contracts with state suppliers, a move that contributed to more than $217 million in savings in 2003 and 2004. He is leading a task force of financial managers from departments represented on the governor’s cabinet to achieve additional contract reductions for the 2005 fiscal year.
Carlson began work with DMB in April 2003. He came to state government from the private sector, where he was employed with the Pepsi Bottling Group. He is a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and holds bachelor’s, master’s, and law degrees from Michigan State University.
Brown was recognized for her commitment to community service activities sponsored by AGA and other organizations. She has served as a foster mother, Boy Scout leader and community role model for more than 17 years. She has served more than eight years as a school board member for the Bath Community Schools. She also has helped with the AGA’s adopt-a-highway cleanup days.
She began her state employment in 1974 as an accounting clerk with the Michigan Department of Transportation. In 1988 she came to DMB as an accountant. She is an expert in database design and maintenance and has been instrumental in improving billing and payroll operations. Brown earned her degree at Michigan State University, where she majored in accounting. She currently is pursuing certification as a certified government financial manager.
The Association of Government Accountants addresses the issues and challenges facing government financial managers. The Greater Lansing Chapter has about 200 members representing local, county, and state government as well as CPA firms, private industry, school districts, and universities.
