JANE HATTEN RECEIVES 2005 GIKAS AWARD

LANSING - The State Board of Education today presented Jane Hattan with the 2005 Stella Gikas Professional Support Staff Excellence Award. The award, first presented in 1991, is presented annually to an outstanding support person in the Michigan Department of Education.

Hattan, a secretary in the department’s Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services, has been employed at the department since 1989.

State Board of Education President Kathleen N. Straus presented Hattan with the gold apple Gikas Award and certificate at the State Board of Education’s monthly meeting.

The Stella Gikas Award is named after a long-time State Board of Education support staff person and is given to an employee who provides leadership to others, outstanding service to education, dedication to excellence, and maintaining the highest professional standards.

Relaying some of the statements submitted with the nomination of Hattan for the award, Straus stated, “She is thorough, anticipates what needs to be done, attends to details and follows through to assure that nothing is missed and that timelines are met;” and “Jane is always friendly, attentive, and helpful to her customers, and goes the extra mile in providing service and assistance.”

Hattan, a resident of Portland, said she was surprised, honored, and flattered by the award. “I admire my co-workers who have received this award in the past, and I have tried my best to emulate their work skills,” Hattan said.
