August 8, 2007 - - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in Brooklyn, will extend the one-way pattern for outbound traffic following the NASCAR Nextel Cup race on Aug. 19. The one-way pattern for outbound traffic will now include all lanes on M-50, south of US-12, to Onsted Highway. Local traffic will be detoured.

"With the tremendous success of the revised one-way pattern for the race last June, we are extremely pleased to offer our fans one more improvement to help traffic flow," MIS President Roger Curtis said. "We want to thank MDOT, local units of government and the Michigan State Police for their effort in helping to expand the one-way pattern and getting our fans home safely and quickly."

The extension of the one-way pattern on M-50 to Onsted Highway follows earlier improvements that were implemented after the race last June. Those improvements included extending the one-way pattern on M-50, from the village of Brooklyn to Napoleon, and extending the pattern to include two lanes eastbound on US-12, all the way to M-52.

"Extending the pattern on M-50 for the August race allows us to improve traffic flow for outbound traffic at all four points of this key intersection," said Dee Parker, MDOT's Jackson Transportation Service Center manager. "We hope this goes a long way toward improving the overall guest experience for MIS fans and race day travelers."

As a way to help visitors navigate around MIS on race weekends, MDOT has a new MIS race-day travel page on the Web. The site will supply information for motorists and race fans regarding statewide construction projects, the new outbound traffic pattern, maps, and links to both WJR (AM 760) and the MIS Web site. The site is located on MDOT's home page at www.michigan.gov/mdot or under www.michigan.gov/drive
