COUNTY: Midland
HIGHWAY: US-10
CLOSEST CITY: Midland
STARTING DATE: Friday, Sept. 19, 2008
ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: Mid-November 2009
PROJECT: Demolition and reconstruction of the westbound US-10 bridge over Sanford Lake is scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 19. This work is part of ongoing road and bridge rehabilitation on US-10 in Midland County, which extends 13.3 miles from Sanford Lake east to the Midland/Bay County line.
Crews are scheduled to bring roadwork to a close and will re-open the highway to traffic by mid-November 2008. This work will resume in April 2009. While roadwork is on hold during the winter months, westbound US-10 bridge reconstruction over Sanford Lake will continue, with traffic maintained using crossovers. The reconstruction of the eastbound US-10 bridge over Sanford Lake is expected to begin after Memorial Day next May, with an expected completion date of November 2009.
This $30.7 million project, which includes paving, ramp reconstruction, drainage and guardrail improvements, two bridge replacements over Sanford Lake, and additional bridge maintenance work, began in April 2008.
TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS: Westbound US-10 traffic across the bridge will be shifted to eastbound US-10 lanes using a temporary median crossover. For the duration of this project, a minimum of one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic crossing the bridge. Traffic will be separated using a temporary concrete barrier.
Boat traffic passing under the US-10 bridges will be diverted to use a single channel beneath the bridge. This open channel will be clearly marked and the channel used may vary, depending on the phase of construction on the bridge.
During roadwork, motorists can expect occasional single lane and shoulder closures on US-10. For the duration of this project, a minimum of one lane in each direction will be maintained at all times.
For updates on this project, visit the list of statewide lane closures on the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/laneclosures. This work is weather-dependent.
CUSTOMER BENEFIT: The rehabilitation of US-10 will serve motorists by extending the life of the roadway and bridges. This project will promote safety by improving drainage and guardrails, which will enhance the ride quality along this section of the roadway for many years to come.
