February 1, 2010 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) popular aviation and space education workshop for teachers will be taken under the wing of the Great Lakes International Aviation Conference (GLIAC) and held Friday, Feb. 19. The in-service workshop will be held in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation and Space Education Program (AVSED) at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi.
The teacher workshop includes a variety of activities and projects. Presenters will introduce middle and secondary education teachers to the many career opportunities in the next-generation aerospace work force, and identify the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary for students to be successful.
"The GLIAC provides an incredible experience for educators," said Dr. Philip Tartalone, chair, GLIAC Planning Committee, and coordinator, Eastern Michigan University Aviation Program. "The hands-on opportunities and STEM principles that the conference provides are invaluable resources for teachers to take back to the classroom."
Educators who attend the GLIAC will experience nationally renowned aviation speakers, an extensive career fair, and an expansive industry trade show with more than 100 industry exhibitors. Graduate credit is available.
"We are excited about the addition of the teacher workshop this year," said Todd Smith, GLIAC conference coordinator. "It will certainly broaden and enhance the conference." Teachers can register specifically for Friday's aerospace workshop, or for the full conference, Feb. 19-20. For additional information about both, visit the conference Web site at www.GreatLakesAviationConference.com. There is a fee to attend.
Over the past 10 years, the GLIAC has developed steadily into the premier event of its kind in the Midwest. The conference is a comprehensive aviation showcase that touches nearly every aspect of the aviation industry. AVSED is recognized as an authority in aerospace education, providing resource consulting services and expertise on various aspects of civil aviation and commercial space education.
