If using a limousine service for spring and summer events, make sure they're licensed with the state

May 11, 2005 - - Michigan state law requires all "for hire" transportation services to be licensed by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Some limousine operators in Michigan are not licensed, and this can create serious problems for consumers.

Spring means prom season and weddings - it is also the busiest time of year for limousine services. MDOT suggests that, before hiring a limousine, you make sure the service is licensed by the state.

A Michigan-licensed limousine service means vehicles undergo annual safety inspections and carry sufficient liability insurance. Operators who do not possess a valid license probably do not have sufficient insurance coverage to meet the state's minimum requirements. Limousine providers who are not licensed are in violation of state law and subject to fines and possible imprisonment.

MDOT advises the public to do their homework. Remember that just because a limousine service advertises in the newspaper and telephone book, it does not guarantee the operator is licensed. A quick call to MDOT's Passenger Transportation Division at 517-241-0679 or 517-241-0680, or a visit MDOT's Web site at www.michigan.gov/mdot will ease your mind. Under "favorite links," click on "Bus and Limo Information," and then select to the "Current List of Carriers". If you do not see a limousine service listed, more than likely the operator is providing service illegally.
